Probably not ECC; it's expensive, slow, and fundamentally unproven. Now that RSA's patents have expired, there's no need to look elsewhere.
Moreover, the threat is from people who are authorized to communicate with you, but who have themselves been compromised. (Think e-mail viruses.)
These devices are often poorly programmed; we'll find out for certain sooner or later.
