How can they become more damaging? To what?

Some already appear to have been targeted, badly. I do expect that they will "improve" in this regard.

Java, possibly; ActiveX definitely. (At least Java has a security architecture; flaws tend to be in implementation.)

E-mail is still the killer application, and the juiciest vector.
