Subject: Firewalls and Firewalls-Digest moving to GNAC
Great Circle Associates has hosted the Firewalls and Firewalls-Digest
mailing lists since their founding in September 1992. I've been very
gratified that so many people have found the lists to be so useful, and
that so many people have been willing to contribute their expertise for
the good of the community.
As many of you know, a few months ago I took a position as Director of
Network Architecture for Covad Communications Company <http://www.covad.com/>.
Covad is an innovative packet CLEC (Competitive Local Exchange Carrier)
which offers DSL-based data circuits at nearly T1 speeds for less than
$200 per month. We're up and running here in the San Francisco Bay Area
now; we'll be expanding to Los Angeles, Boston, New York, Washington DC,
and Seattle later this year, and throughout the United States in years to
come. You may have seen articles about us in Forbes, Network World, the
San Jose Mercury News, and many other publications; you'll be hearing a
lot more about us in the future, I'm sure. We're doing exciting stuff,
and as their chief network architect, I'm right in the thick of figuring
out how to make it all work, which is what I love to do.
Firewalls and Firewalls-Digest are very popular, high-volume mailing lists,
and they take a fair amount of time and effort to maintain. Life in a
high-profile Silicon Valley startup doesn't leave much time for anything
else, though, so Great Circle Associates is going into hibernation.
Therefore, after 5 and a half years and 111+ Mbytes of discussions spanning
45,517 messages and 3018 digests, the Firewalls and Firewalls-Digest
mailing lists are moving to a new home at GNAC, which is a consulting
and managed services firm based here in the Silicon Valley that I think
Many people apparently have a mental image of Great Circle Associates as a
good-sized consulting firm, with dozens of expert staff members working on
a wide variety of projects; that's never been the case, however. In fact,
Great Circle Associates has never been more than myself and a handful of
other folks, like my good friend and our resident list-manager for the
last couple of years, Michael C. Berch. We've worked on the projects that
interested us, but we've never really tried to grow the company beyond the
framework necessary to undertake those projects. In many ways, though,
GNAC is the company that people apparently think Great Circle Associates
is; GNAC does have dozens of expert staff members working on a wide variety
The folks at GNAC will send another message to the list shortly,
detailing the changes in the posting address (firstname.lastname@example.org),
administrative address (email@example.com), web site
<http://lists.gnac.net/firewalls/>, archive location, and so forth.
Pointers to the new information will also be available from the current
Firewalls web site, so there shouldn't be any broken URLs.
Great Circle Associates will continue to host all of our other mailing
lists (List-Managers and the various Majordomo-related mailing lists),
and will continue to be the primary distribution point for releases of
the Majordomo mailing list management software. Only the Firewalls and
Firewalls-Digest mailing lists and associated archives are moving to GNAC.
Great Circle Associates will also continue to offer presentations of
the one-day Building Internet Firewalls tutorial; for information on
this tutorial, see <http://www.greatcircle.com/tutorials/bif.html>.
I wish all of you the best, and I'm sure that under GNAC's care, the
Firewalls and Firewalls-Digest mailing lists will continue to be a
useful and popular forum.
